Welcome!

Thank you for registering with us for the Online Security Training. We want to make the course as simple as possible for you. Therefore, it is critical that you understand some essential facts about the course and the testing process.

The course was designed by the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services in agreement with the regulations set out in the Private Security and Investigative Services Act (PSISA). This act regulates all the laws regarding the Security Industry. The Ministry noticed that several Security Guards were not aware of these regulations and were getting themselves in trouble unknowingly. Therefore, it was decided that the course was absolutely mandatory to reduce the liabilities on guards by making them aware of the Ontario laws while working as a security guard. The final security exam, which you will have to take at the end of your training, lets the ministry know that you understand these laws before they issue you a security license.

The exam is designed to ensure that you understand the material and not just know the answer. In other words, you must select the BEST answer to the multiple choice questions when several answers may actually be correct. For example, you may get questions like the following:

If you are working as a security doorman at a club and two intoxicated (drunk) individuals come to your door to enter the premises what do you do?

a) Let them enter but keep an eye on them.

b) Notify your supervisor of the situation

c) Restrict them to a designated area

d) Do not let them in

While all the answers may appear to be reasonably correct, only one is acceptable answer which is (D) Do not let them in. The reason is because if you let them inside, you will become Liable (responsible) for them until they sober up! Also, it is simply illegal to be intoxicated in a public place in Ontario according to the Liquor License Act.

If you are working as a Security Doorman at a restaurant and you notice someone who has clearly had too much alcohol to drink, who is now ready to leave, what do you do in this situation?

a) Ask him if he's driving and if so, call a cab for him

b) Notify your supervisor

c) Take his keys from him

d) Make sure he gets home safe

Here again, you may notice a few answers which could be correct here, however, the one that covers all liabilities and circumstances is (D) Make sure he gets home safe. Now, this may mean that you have to do (a), (b) as well as (c). However, you show that you understand your responsibilities by selecting (d) which is the BEST answer to cover all similar situations and circumstances.

Why do you put Handcuffs on someone?

a) To restrain him

b) To control him

c) So he won't hurt others

d) For your own protection

Although the others are also correct, the correct answer is (D), your personal safety is the most important of them all. Therefore it is the Best answer to the question.

Some of the Questions require you to have knowledge of legal terminology. Such as the following:

What is the definition of the term injunction?

a) A mandatory rule

b) A Court Order

c) A traffic ticket

d) A written contract

An injunction is another word for "court order" so (B) would be the correct answer they are looking for although (A) may also be correct (B) is the best answer as it is more specific.

Other questions will be less obvious, but are important for you to understand. Such as:

Who does your security notebook belong to?

a) Yourself

b) The supervisor

c) The ministry

d) The company

The notebook will always belong to the company (D). Even if you purchase it yourself at the local security supply store The reason is because what you write in the notebook can be used as evidence in court. This is why most notebooks are referred to as "Evidence Book."

Your partner at work was injured and taken to the hospital with severe injuries. What is the MOST important thing that needs to be done as soon as possible?

a) Write an incident report

b) Notify the client

c) Make sure his next of kin (family) is informed about the situation in case he dies as a result of the injuries.

d) Nothing just let the police take over.

The correct answer is (C) notify his next of kin(family). The police may not be able to get any information from the injured guard and the client will be informed by your incident report about what happened. However, the family will need to visit the injured guard at the hospital immediately and will be very upset if they wasn't informed about the situation.

Who do you have to show your Security license to?

a) Anyone who ask to see it

b) Your employer

c) A child

d) A Police officer

The correct answer is (A) anyone who ask to see it including a child in case you have to detain him it is very important that you prove who you are. Once you have your license it becomes part of your uniform and you MUST produce it to anyone (Police, Child, etc) who ask to see it.

Also look for hints in the exam about the correct answer. For example:

What type of an Alarm "sensor" covers large spaces like a warehouse?

a) Area or Volumetric sensor

b) Burglar Alarm

c) Fire alarm

d) Intrusion Alarm

The correct answer is (A). This question is asking for a specific answer which in this case is an alarm sensor.

What can sometimes be used as a perimeter line to indicate private property?

a) A Fence

b) A sign

c) A Shrub line

d) A Gate

A Shrub Line (C) is the correct answer in this case because it is less obvious then the rest. which makes it more conducive to the question asked. Plus the word "line" gives you another hint for the correct answer.

Where can you find information about evidence and trespassing?

a) Criminal Code

b) Ontario and Canadian evidence Act and the Trespass and Property Act.

c) Charter of rights and freedoms

d) Code of Conduct

The correct answer should be obvious that it is (B). You can find information about evidence, etc. by searching in the appropriate Act which is more specific then just the criminal code which makes it the BEST answer.

When taking the exam always think about Liabilities and remember to always choose the best answer to the questions, not just the first one that makes sense to you.
